Spring Cleaning the Body

Spring Has Sprung...at least it has here in Texas.  I love to organize, purge unnecessary household/clothing items, and declutter my house this time of year.  Spring cleaning makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and like I can breathe again.  I feel the same way about the body...it can use a Spring Cleaning too!  

 

Our bodies are constantly challenged with toxins and chemicals, processed foods, lack of sleep, and poor hygiene.  When we clean the body, our organs are free to function at their full capacity, the metabolism gets a jump-start and the body can work more efficiently.  The following are some Spring Cleaning ideas for the body..

 

1) Stay Hydrated

Most people hear all the time about the importance of drinking water and staying hydrated but it really is extremely important.  Water is essential for supporting the natural detoxification process of the body.  Water is necessary to "unclog the pipes" of your body and flush the toxins from the system.  It's also important to make sure you're drinking filtered, High pH water.

 

2) Pay Attention To Your Body's Sensitivities

It took me years to figure out my food sensitivities...I have a lot of them.  I never realized how my body reacts to eggs until I cut them out and I've also realized I have an extreme intolerance to all seeds.  If you feel uncomfortable, extremely fatigued, bloated, etc. after eating, you probably have a food intolerance which is your body's way of telling you it doesn't like a particular food.  I highly encourage you to figure out your intolerances and eliminate them from your diet.  If you continue to consume a food you are intolerant to, you are increasing the inflammation in your body which will eventually cause the body to breakdown...take it from me, I know about this!

 

3) Consider Your Skincare Products

This one was eye opening for me.  When I started my transition into a more hollistic lifestyle, I came to realize how many toxic skincare/beauty products I was using.  All skincare products are absorbed into the body which means we are flooding our system with toxins...no thank you!  Start with changing one item at a time.  I started with natural deodorant (I use Primally Pure) and worked towards changing one product/week.  You can also look at some of my previous posts for brand recommendations.

 

4) Switch To Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

I find this especially important in the kitchen.  I cook constantly and all of the food I prepare is in contact with counter surfaces, cutting boards, knives, plates, etc.  I make sure my dish soap, dishwasher detergent, and surface cleaner are all non-toxic.  I also use all-natural laundry detergent and dryer sheets.  This is a hard one for me and I'm still working on the transition but feel a sense of accomplishment with every product I switch.

 

5) Get A Massage

I have often talk about the importance of self care.  It's so important to care for your body and give it a little TLC.  My hubby and I are huge fans of massages and indulge in them often (about 1x/month).  Massage is beneficial to the body because it helps with relaxation, alleviates muscle soreness, stimulates body repair/rejuvenation, and promotes circulation which can help expel toxins from the body.  Treat yourself to a massage as often as you can.

 

6) Choose Organic Food When You Can

Fruits and vegetable plants and trees are treated with chemicals that, over time, can accumulate in our bodies.  Basically, if the produce has a peel or rind you would eat, buy organic, especially, lettuce, berries, apples, herbs, and many more! Definitely make sure you are thoroughly washing all produce before consuming.

 

7) Get Up and Move Your Body

I cannot stress enough the importance of exercise for eliminating toxins from the body.  Being a personal trainer for 20 years and a bit of an exercise junkie, nothing makes me feel a "purge" more than exercise.  Not only do I love a good sweat, but also the feel of giving my body a chance to stretch, move and strengthen.  Exercise is effective in raising the heart rate and body temperature which helps excrete toxins.  You don't have to run 10 miles to get the benefits...find a type of exercise you not only enjoy, but can maintain and gives you that "cleanse".

 

8) Keep A Positive Mindset

I truly believe that achieving and maintaining a positive mindset are essential in ridding the body of toxins.  If you hang on to negative energy, it accumulates in the body which makes your toxin load increase.  I struggle with this but really try to clear my mind of negative thoughts and I truly believe it helps to detoxify my mind and body.  Just Be Happy!

It's also important to remember that incorporating these ideas into your everyday lifestyle, year round, can help keep the body clear of toxins and running at full capacity.  Start a gradual transition, pace yourself and reward yourself for any and all changes!
